refuge

ahh well. tomorrow we leave. waiting on the last load of clothes to dry. kitchen is all put away and the cabinet tops and kitchen table wiped clean. kitchen floor is mopped and bags are packed and ready to load in the morning. goodbyes said to the beach and the last sunset on the bay. all's left is saying goodnight stars, goodnight moon, then hit the sack. chuck will be back next week for his last or next to last visit before bringing the boat back home to rest in its wintertime spot under the carport. i may be back for a day or two, maybe not. either way, it's been good to get back to our normal summertime activities here on the island.

snowballs at megan's. several years ago they began to offer cream filled snowballs, you know that huge squirt of condensed milk on top. it's become my fav. creole cream cheese with cream. yum. not the every day highlight like when the kids were little, but still an all-around great treat no matter how old or young ye may be:)

grand isle state park. down at the tip of the island. $1 per person entrance fee. in days gone by it was always a highlight of our summer trips. a great adventure to go down there to a different stretch of beach. we used to love to walk around the tip of the island to the inlet of the bay on the back side. lots of treasure to be found...sometimes. i remember the year we found several intact sand dollars. precious loot. steph and i made a little trip down last time they came. i see they re-built the fishing pier which katrina smashed to smithereens. good as new. no one was fishing off of it the day we went. curious. although we did meet a young sightseeing couple from the netherlands with their two adorable little girls who were trying to picture the great expanse of gulf laid out before them covered in goo. the beach we used to walk around the tip has been long gone, washed away. now it's just marsh grass and nowhere to really walk. they created a rock jetty that pretty much stops further exploration. the wooden tower is still there, having weathered many a storm, even katrina. how many trips me and the kids made up those steps, some years dodging great wasp nests to make it to the top to be rewarded by the fantastic view:)

well, it's gettin late and i gotta get up early in the morning. tomorrow night from home i'll try to upload a few pics if i can ferret them out. and maybe tie everything up with a few more reminisces (sp?) gotta go now ... the stars and that big old half moon up there competing for attention with all the brightness he can muster are waiting for their final goodnight from a dear old friend & fellow choir member... :)
